Knocking M-Step Off The Map!

Knocking M-Step Off The Map!

The gym at Burns Elementary Middle School was louder than it had been in weeks. After nearly three long weeks of M-STEP testing, students were finally getting a chance to relax, laugh, and cheer. The bleachers were packed with excited sixth, seventh, and eighth graders wearing school colors and homemade signs as they waited for the big event everyone had been talking about — the Staff vs. Students Basketball Game.

The student team came running into the gym first, full of confidence and energy. The crowd exploded with cheers as classmates slapped hands and called out their friends’ names. Many of the students had been planning for this game since testing season began, determined to prove that middle schoolers could beat the adults.

Then came the staff team.

Teachers, support staff, the parent coordinator, and the neighborhood police officer walked into the gym smiling and waving to the crowd. Some students laughed seeing their teachers in basketball jerseys instead of classroom clothes, but others knew the adults might be tougher competition than expected.

“Y’all better be ready!” one teacher shouted jokingly as students cheered even louder.

The game started fast. The students played with speed and excitement, racing up and down the court while their classmates screamed from the bleachers. A seventh grader hit the first basket of the game, causing students to jump to their feet chanting, “Students! Students!”

But the staff team stayed calm.

The neighborhood police officer showed surprising skills with several smooth layups, while the parent coordinator made an incredible pass that led to another basket. Teachers who students only knew from math, science, and English classes suddenly looked like basketball stars.

Every play brought more laughter and excitement. Students cheered wildly whenever their team scored, but they also laughed when teachers celebrated their baskets with funny dances and exaggerated victory poses. Even the referees had trouble hiding their smiles.

By halftime, the game was close.

The students were determined to pull off the upset, but the staff team used teamwork and experience to stay ahead. In the second half, the adults slowly pulled away with strong defense and smart passing. The students never gave up, continuing to hustle and encourage one another until the final buzzer sounded.

In the end, the staff won the game.

Still, the final score hardly mattered.

The gym remained filled with smiles, laughter, and applause as students and staff congratulated each other. For one afternoon, the stress of testing disappeared. Teachers and students shared a moment that reminded everyone that school is not only about exams and grades — it is also about community, fun, and making memories together.

As students left the gym talking excitedly about their favorite plays, many were already asking the same question:

“When’s the rematch?”
